Swallow grew up within Jacksonville Florida. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia, where she studied Middle Eastern Studies. Swallow then moved in New York City where she obtained her master's degree in acting at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Swallow has played the roles of both the bad and good guys on film and television. She was a police detective on Ringer, a detective's wife on Southland as well as a bounty-hunter in CBS' The Odds pilot The Odds and a bank burglar in Medium. Additionally, she was a Mermaid on Flight of the Conchords as she was the main actress in the Shana Sosin-directed feature The Rift.
